California is a state in the Western United States, found along the Pacific Coast. It is the biggest sub-national economy in the world. A little over 84 percent of the state’s homeowners hold a high school degree, the least expensive high school education rate of all 50 states.

Prior to European colonization, California was one of the most culturally and linguistically varied areas in pre-Columbian North America and included the highest Native American population density north of what is now Mexico. European exploration in the 17th and 16th centuries led to the colonization of California by the Spanish Empire. In 1804, it was consisted of in Alta California province within the Viceroyalty of New Spain. The location became a part of Mexico in 1821, following its effective war for independence, however was ceded to the United States in 1848 after the Mexican– American War. The California Gold Rush started in 1848 and caused dramatic social and market changes, including large-scale migration into California, an around the world financial boom, and the California genocide of indigenous peoples. The western portion of Alta California was then organized and admitted as the 31st state on September 9, 1850, following the Compromise of 1850.

Notable contributions to popular culture, for example in entertainment, sports, music, and style, have their origins in California. The San Francisco Bay Area and the Greater Los Angeles Area are commonly seen as the centers of the international innovation and movie industries, respectively. California’s ports and harbors handle about a 3rd of all U.S. imports, many originating in Pacific Rim global trade.
