California is a state in the Western United States, located along the Pacific Coast. With almost 39.2million locals throughout a total location of roughly 163,696 square miles (423,970 km²), it is the most populated U.S. state and the third-largest by area. It is also the most inhabited subnational entity in North America and the 34th most populous on the planet. The Greater Los Angeles and San Francisco Bay areas are the nation’s 2nd and 5th most populated metropolitan areas respectively, with the previous having more than 18.7million residents and the latter having over 9.6million. Sacramento is the state’s capital, while Los Angeles is the most populated city in the state and the second most populous city in the nation. San Francisco is the second most largely populated significant city in the nation. Los Angeles County is the nation’s most populous, while San Bernardino County is the largest county by location in the nation. California borders Oregon to the north, Nevada and Arizona to the east, the Mexican state of Baja California to the south; and has a coastline along the Pacific Ocean to the west.

The economy of the state of California is the largest in the United States, with a $3.4 trillion gross state product (GSP) since 2022. It is the largest sub-national economy worldwide. If California were a sovereign nation, it would rank as the world’s fifth-largest economy since 2022, behind Germany and ahead of India, in addition to the 37th most populated. The Greater Los Angeles area and the San Francisco Bay Area are the country’s second- and third-largest urban economies ($1.0trillion and $0.5trillion respectively since 2020). The San Francisco Bay Area Combined Statistical Area had the nation’s highest gdp per capita ($106,757) amongst big primary statistical areas in 2018, and is house to 5 of the world’s 10 largest companies by market capitalization and four of the world’s 10 wealthiest people. A little over 84 percent of the state’s citizens hold a high school degree, the most affordable high school education rate of all 50 states.

Prior to European colonization, California was one of the most culturally and linguistically diverse areas in pre-Columbian North America and consisted of the greatest Native American population density north of what is now Mexico. The California Gold Rush began in 1848 and led to significant social and demographic modifications, including large-scale migration into California, an around the world financial boom, and the California genocide of native peoples. The western part of Alta California was then arranged and confessed as the 31st state on September 9, 1850, following the Compromise of 1850.

Notable contributions to popular culture, for example in home entertainment, sports, music, and style, have their origins in California. The San Francisco Bay Area and the Greater Los Angeles Area are widely seen as the centers of the worldwide technology and film industries, respectively. California’s harbors and ports handle about a third of all U.S. imports, a lot of stemming in Pacific Rim international trade.
